Pontoon Boats - Large, flat-bottomed boats often used for leisurely cruising, parties, and fishing on lakes and calm waters. Houseboats - Floating homes that are often used for extended stays on the water, typically on lakes or slow-moving rivers. Jet Boats - Boats that use a jet of water for propulsion instead of a traditional propeller, making them ideal for shallow waters.

Boating Safety
Boating in all types of ways can be great fun and amazing times, however if not carried out in the correct ways can become hazardous and dangerous in so many different ways in a short space of time. It’s strongly advised that before taking to the water with any type of water craft to take some professional advice and guidance from those who have the right type of knowledge and courses along with training where required according to your chosen type of boating. It's always good to learn and gain local knowledge as to the waters you plan to use for your water craft, and learn about sea tides and changes which will and can change the way the sea will move and behave. Some tidal rivers and estuaries like the River Thames can flow really fast creating strong currents on the turn of the tide and can become rough conditions. Also, wind speed and direction can make some significant changes in the weather, some boats and large vessels will also have equipment that can measure and display the speed and direction of the wind, and also how fast the current is flowing as well.

Boat Safety Equipment
Weather Reports - It’s always good to check and keep an eye on the weather conditions using a reliable source like the Met Office online or VHF radio Ch 65 a dedicated channel for weather reports on your locations from the NCI, most harbours and marinas will also provide weather reports as well, when going of shore you may lose your mobile or internet signal so always good to check weather before you set off. VHF Radio - VHF radio is an important piece of safety equipment on most types of water crafts, before using one you will need to do a one-day course to obtain a user’s licence for a VHF radio, some larger vessels and different radio frequencies may also require an operator’s licence as well. If not used in accordance with Ofcom regulations the user could face possible criminal offences and charges, best to check out the courses and requirements with your supplier, Ofcom or a qualified person.
Safety Equipment - VHF Radio portable or fixed best if you can have both, SOS transponder connected to radio where possible. Buoyancy aids, Life Jacket, Life Raft, Life Saving Ring / Danbuoy. Flares - (Flares which by law can only be used in emergency’s), alerting for SOS assistance. Air Horn, Binoculars, Compass, Tool Kit, Torch, Fire Extinguisher Fire Blanket. First aid kit, spare drinking water food and snacks. All types of safety equipment will vary from small to larger vessels and dependant on type of use. Hoping none of this will never be needed, but always best to have it than not.
